Hedge Cutting in summer

🌿 In England, farms are prohibited from cutting or trimming hedgerows between 1 March and 31 August under the Management of Hedgerows (England) Regulations 2024. This seasonal ban is designed to protect nesting birds and preserve biodiversity.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what the law says:

🚫 Cutting Ban

  • No cutting or trimming of hedgerows on or next to agricultural land from 1 March to 31 August.
  • Applies to hedgerows over 20 metres long or those connecting to other hedgerows.
  • Includes hedgerows bordering allotments, grazing land, and even woodlands used for farming.
  • ✅ Exemptions

Cutting may be allowed during the restricted period only under specific conditions:

  • For road safety (e.g. overhanging branches obstructing visibility).
  • If the hedgerow is dead, diseased, or poses a danger.
  • For hedge-laying or coppicing (between 1 March and 30 April).
  • To treat serious pest or weed infestations.
  • If required by a statutory body, like a utility company.
  • If you’re managing land and unsure whether your hedgerow qualifies, or if you need to apply for a derogation, the official GOV.UK guidance is your best bet.
